Disclaimer: For all you bigots out there who do NOT tolerate opinions that they do not agree with, or who reject the fact that people can view situations differently please leave now.
I haven't blogged in a while now. But since keeping this blog fresh and updated is one of my resolutions for the big 09, this will no longer be a problem.
This is my first post regarding the attacks on Gaza. I would like to make it very clear that I am generally against war, for several reasons; Primarily because I believe war is a political game between two sides that ends up with the bloodshed of innocent civilians who at the end of the day have nothing to benefit from the whole thing.
I have several thoughts about the situation, some might be points that you agree with, whilst others might not be compatible with your insight on the whole thing. I decided that there is no reason for me to censor my thoughts and beliefs just to fit the mainstream Arabic view.
For those who are blind supporters of Hamas, you have no right to complain about the attacks and the bloodshed that's going on. Why?
Well firstly because Hamas believes that every Israeli (from their elderly to their children, passing through their men and women) should die. And if Hamas has the military strength of Israel, the death toll of Israeli civilians would easily cross the 1000 milestone. Period. But looking at it from a different perspective, Hamas labels itself as the only true resistance against the Israeli occupation. Fair enough. Hamas wants war against Israel. Fair enough. But when a group of militants decide to wage a war against a beast of a country, then the retaliation of that beast should be expected.
Again, I am not justifying the killing of children. Because I am all for peace as I stated earlier. But not to blame Hamas for those killings as well is just being naive. Because Hamas took leadership in that strip of land, and decided to wage a war. In a war, casualties are expected. IF you believe war is the only answer, then you should expect the death toll. Note the if clause here.
I also read reports of people who complain about the Arabs not rushing in and declaring war on Israel. The Arab states clearly demonstrated that they are against Hamas' tactics when it comes to Israel. The Arab states were clearly against Hamas firing those God forsaken rockets (it hurts me whenever I label those fireworks as rockets) at the face of Israel. They knew it would help no one, they gave their advice to Hamas. But Hamas continued to give Israel an excuse to attack Gaza. Who ends up losing the most? The Palestinians. Hamas has no right to label Arab leaders as traitors and foreign agents because let's face it, there is nothing we can do. Specially when it comes to Jordan. Such a small country with practically no resources of its own.
I also witnessed some of the demonstrations in Amman that aimed to focus our eyes and ears on the humanitarian crisis going on in Gaza, although at the time every TV in Jordan was switched on Al-Jazeera, watching our Palestinian brothers in the Gaza strip caught in between two vicious political enemies. But what shocked me was the fact that many demonstrators were holding pictures of Saddam Hussein, and were actually saluting the guy! How inappropriate and un-PC! Saddam Hussein has killed more Iraqis than Israel has killed Palestinians. And saluting this madman in a demonstration that was aimed to show Arabic solidarity is just a slap in the face to our Iraqi brothers.
And what cracked me up is the Sudanese president condemning the Israeli inhumane attacks on Gaza.
Now onto Israel. Albeit that Hamas is a disgusting party that I would be more than happy to see taken down, Israel has to be prosecuted for its many unnecessary massacres. Levini, Olmert and Barak should be charged as war criminals.
My 2 cents.

You know, you do have some good points and I agree with most of them. However, you have an asymmetric article, as in, you're blaming Hamas in 95% of it while citing couple of bad booboos that the Israelis have done.
Well, sorry but history is a little longer than 12 days. It's also a lot longer than 2 years in which ISRAEL REFUSED to negotiate with Hamas the ELECTED representatives of the Palestinian people. No one else in the whole Arab world including the dear Kingdom of Jordan can say they have ELECTED their government that way.
Anyway, in the 7 or 8 years that the rockets have been "thrown" at Israel they provided little more than a political statement. They killed what 5? Compared to Hundreds being systematically mowed down by the Israeli war machine. "Excuse"? Oh please ... When did Israel need an excuse to do anything?
However, the two years of siege, starvation, supply shortages, power outages don't "somehow" come into the equation as retaliatory reasons! The killing of previous generations are not even mentioned as reasons why more young people are being faced with absolutely "no-hope" throwing themselves towards anything
I have to admit, it takes a whole lot to drive someone towards disparition at that scale, and what is happening now even if it succeeded in killing every last Hamas militant is going to only be the fertile ground where even worse levels of extremism is going to flourish and the next round is going to be worse.
You also happen to forget that Israel is in violation of UN resolution, Universal declaration of Human rights which mandates that wars shouldn't be waged in civilian populated areas EVEN if the other party is hiding there. It doesn't mention the use of illegal weapons against civilians. It doesn't mention the atrocities that were created to make the life of Palestinians in the big prison they can't leave with the name of Gaza which is the classic definition of genocide and it doesn't mention the political assassination that Israel commits on a daily bases for everyone not only for POLITICAL leaders but also to their families.
I think I preached long enough here. But if there is anything you would get out of all the "blah blah blah" I said above, make it be this: It's easy to blame the victim, no one is going come after you. It's real courage to attack the aggressor because that's where morality lies.
Yazan, very well said! I agree with everything you have said.
Love the disclaimer ;)
Today protestors in M3an wear holding up pictures of Osama Bin Laden and Abu Musab Zarqawi.
Sigh.
Great post Yazan, I do think the we tend to make things worse for ourselves without knee-jerk reaction to anything and everything around us.
I can't believe I am going to be saying this, but I agree with Qwaidar (no offense, but we tend to disagree more often than not).
We find it easy to forget the history of the conflict and look at only a short span. I think Hamas is the symptom of the problem rather than the cause. If Israel was serious about peace, it could end the core aspects of the whole conflict within a year.
Thanks for everyone who read this. Dear Qwaider I realize that my post was what some people would label as biased. But it's because I am.
I am definitely against the attacks Israel is undergoing. But since the internet and media is drowned with voices condemning the attacks. My post was mainly a reply to those calling for opening the border with Israel and getting Jordan involved in the fighting which wouldn't benefit anyone.
I am going to write a more detailed blog entry soon when I put all my thoughts together in a more structured manner.
